Job Description

Overview / Responsibilities

This position has responsibility for the functional and operational management of the global mining consulting business. The Vice President, Global Mining Consulting will guide strategies for growth of mining consulting across all offices in alignment with strategies and financial objectives for the global mining business and be accountable for the financial performance of the group.


This will involve development of a strong geology, mining and process team that is a competitive fit for the mining market. The Mining Consulting Group will provide early entry into key mining projects by adding significant value at the study stage and by being the consultant-of-choice for its clients. The Vice President will generate a strong business development culture throughout the Group. The Consulting Group will also collaborate strongly with other company business units as warranted.


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop a superior brand in geology, mining and process consulting services
  • Ensure strong communication of opportunities between offices and related business units, sharing of resources between offices and development of strong win plans for new projects
  • Ensure quality control in the performance and completion of consulting studies through establishment of professional work practices and application of the Group’s peer review process
  • Responsible for the P&L for the Global Consulting business
  • Generate a performance culture that emphasizes production of a value-added product on time and on budget, and aligned with client objectives and strategies
  • Drive innovation in new and cost-competitive consulting services
  • Facilitate the interactions between geology, mining and process consulting teams, as well as with engineering groups to achieve well executed and fit-for-purpose projects
  • Actively support group business development through participation in professional conferences, direct business development activities, client relationship building and preparation of proposal scopes of work and budgets
  • Facilitate the recruitment of staff that improve Group capabilities and better serve the needs of mining clients
  • Ensure the proper selection of staff for projects in coordination with proposal managers, operations managers, consulting group managers and other technical leads
  • Collaborate with Global Mining engineering offices to select and capture key mining projects
  • Develop annual budgets and plans for training, professional development, recruiting and acquisition of technical tools to ensure the Wood’ leadership in geology, mining and process consulting services
  • Communicate strategies and performance to senior management
  • Work with consulting leaders, administrative assistants and finance department staff to forecast utilization and financial performance of the Group
  • Ensure professional development of the Group by maintaining a continuous and strong focus on performance discussions between managers and staff, and assessment of training needs

Regular travel to project sites, Wood Mining offices and client headquarters will be required.

Skills / Qualifications

  • Minimum 20 years international experience in diverse roles in consulting and engineering studies, in the mining industry
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in managing diverse technical teams
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mining, Resource Geology, or relevant discipline; Master’s or PhD are highly desired
  • Experience with a wide range of commodities in diverse global settings is a preference
  • Excellent communication, mentoring, and collaboration skills is necessary
  • Demonstrated leadership and credibility managing a Consulting Group, and managing full P&L
  • Strong drive to succeed, and outgoing personality
  • Strong desire to grow and manage a consulting business
  • Industry recognition as a credible leader in providing mining consulting services
