Job Description

Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is recruiting for a Terrestrial Biologist / Ecologist to join our Environment & Infrastructure Solutions group this position can be based out of our Mississauga or Cambridge or London, ON offices.

 

Key Responsibilities  

  • Design and conduct independent field surveys for at-risk, sensitive and common species throughout Ontario using appropriate sampling protocols and specializing in technical vegetation, wildlife, avian and wetland ecology
  • Conduct impact/effects assessment, mitigation plans, environmental protection plans, and liaise with clients and agency personnel, preparation of biology sections for EA/EIS/EIAs
  • Organizing logistics for environment technical field programs with emphasis on the appropriate management and application of Avian and Terrestrial ecology based surveys
  • Manage, coordinate and lead field work in local and remote locations in support of baseline, environmental effects monitoring and other post development/permit compliance monitoring
  • Provide mentorship to junior and contract staff specific to field data collection following standard and safe operating procedures
  • Data and sample management including collection, recording and digital filing, transport and lab submission of samples, chain of custody, analysis and associated Quality Control of all data and results
  • Liaise with other technical specialists including other ecologists, hydrologists, GIS specialists, infrastructure engineers, environmental, and other disciplines
  • Cooperatively coordinate with discipline leads and management staff to achieve efficient, scope compliant and cost-effective assignment delivery
  • Establish yourself as a Natural Environment specialist with emphasis on protocols, procedures and relevant regulatory requirements associated with delivering programs for federal, municipal, transportation, and mining infrastructure development projects
  • Engage and coordinate with internal environmental discipline specific technical support teams and engineering design teams in the application of environmental permitting and approvals process
  • Initiate development of skills in Environmental Construction Compliance Monitoring and management of related project specific programs as the relate to compliance with natural environment and species at risk based regulations and contract specifications

 

Skills / Qualifications

  • B.Sc., M.Sc., Biology, Ecology or related discipline
  • Biologist/Ecologist experienced with Ontario species of conservation concern and related regulations with 3+ years of experience
  • Knowledge of provincial, federal and municipal environmental legislation, guidelines, policies and best practices to inform reporting, design criteria, permit applications or other documents
  • Experience conducting natural heritage inventories, with emphasis on identifying significant wildlife habitat
  • Experience completing a Natural Heritage Assessment under the Renewable Energy Act an asset, including consultations with regulatory agencies
  • Certificate and applied knowledge of the Ontario Ecological Land Classification (ELC) system and the Ontario Wetlands Evaluation System (OWES) an asset
  • Previous experience with client, stakeholder and regulatory agency liaison considered an asset
  • Knowledge of tree inventory and tree preservation protocols and planning; Recognized certification as an arborist (ISA) will be considered an asset
  • Valid Canadian Drivers License
