  • Overview / Responsibilities

    Wood is currently seeking a Mechanical Layout Lead to join our Mining & Minerals team in Oakville, Ontario who will apply extensive and comprehensive knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and practices to the organization’s products and services. The Lead will plan, schedule and assign/supervise or conduct broad and/or technically complex engineering assignments requiring judgment, independent evaluation, selection and significant adaptation and deviation from standard techniques and procedures. 

     

     

    Key Responsibilities 

    •  May serve as the mechanical layout lead on a project; planning, managing and coordinating the mechanical layout activities on large and/or technically complex portion of a project and/or serve in an individual contributor role as the mechanical layout expert completing broadly defined and/or technically complex engineering assignments
    • Develop, plan, evaluate and recommend solutions for difficult problems
    • Responsible for progress reports
    • Manage the activities of task assigned personnel
    • Coordinate the activities of a team of designers assigned to a project and provide technical supervision of the day-to-day activities of task assigned personnel
    • Supervise and/or prepares proposals, contract design drawings.
    • Supervise a small to medium size group of technical personnel
    • Provide work assignments to personnel based on CI/BEDD sheets and schedule requirements
    • Approves and issues drawings
    • Coordinate work of subordinates with other disciplines and organizational project management team
    • Coordinate and interface with equipment suppliers
    • Prepare technical evaluations of supplier’s proposals
    • Give effective presentations to customers, suppliers and internally within the organization
    • Work with and communicate with project management team
    • Assure the technical quality of work performed by subordinates based upon organizational standards, codes and general knowledge of engineering principles and projects
    • Perform or review engineering and design tasks requiring operation of available computer assisted software and/or equipment that increments work productivity and accuracy
    • Investigate client and/or project management grievances at assigned project to determine facts and recommends a solution
    • Consult with supervisor and other experts concerning unusual problems and develop and apply advanced techniques and methods as required
    • May develop and implement improved designs, work methods, practices and procedures
    • Assure that all work on assigned projects is timely, accurate and high quality
    • Perform other related duties as assigned by management
    • Organize, plans, and coordinate own work as well as the resources assigned on a specific project
    • Set expectations and monitor delegated activities for schedule and budget
    • Develop subordinates’ skills and encourage growth; takes responsibility for subordinates’ actions

    Skills / Qualifications

    • 10-15 years of experience as a process-plant mechanical & layout designer
    • Minimum 5 years’ experience as a lead layout designer in mechanical field, preferably associated with mineral and mining processing plant or similar industries.
    • Experience in piping design is an asset
    • Ability to design under all fire and safety codes and regulations
    • Deep understanding of a process-plant design development and activities
    • Experience in site development and site utilities design
    • Ability to assess design risks
    • Construction experience is an asset
    • Working collaboratively with other disciplines
    • Experience in layout 3D modeling and drafting – Aveva environment is preferred
    • Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and quality requirements
    • Flexible to travel when needed
    • Understanding project controls requirements
    • Ability to assess work, workload and estimate time of design activities
    • Working knowledge of the organization’s technology, knowledge and understanding of how the mechanical equipment activities integrate into a complete project
    • Ability to work and communicate effectively with customers and vendors
    • Ability to work with administrative supervision and effectively manage multiple and conflicting priorities
