  • Overview / Responsibilities

    Wood is currently seeking a Building Services Lead Engineer to join our Mining & Minerals team in Oakville, Ontario who will apply extensive and comprehensive knowledge of building services (HVAC, Fire Protection, Compressed Air, Dust Collection, Plumbing, Potable Water, Drainage) engineering principles and practices to the organization’s products and services. The Lead Engineer will plan, schedule and assign/supervise or conduct broad and/or technically complex engineering assignments requiring judgment, independent evaluation, selection and significant adaptation and deviation from standard techniques and procedures.  

     

    Key Responsibilities

    • Building Services including HVAC, Fire Protection, Compressed air, Dust Collection, Plumbing, Potable Water and Drainage engineering design related to mining and metal processing, chemical or similar processing industries
    • Develop Building Services Design Criteria, Specifications, and equipment lists
    • Develop utility, heating and ventilation requirements
    • Develop, or provide input into 3D models and 2D drawings;
    • Prepare heating and ventilation calculations
    • Prepare system design calculations
    • Co-ordinate the Building Services design activities with other disciplines
    • Deliver a fit for purpose Building Services design for construction
    • Assist with the development of Building Services Flow Sheets, PFDs and P&IDs
    • Write specifications and contract documents as well as review project documents prior to issue for scope and presentation, including checking for technical accuracy
    • Assist in manpower plans for capital projects as well as provide estimates for engineering output to appropriate clients
    • Adhere to project budget and schedules
    • Developing and maintaining positive client relationships
    • Coordinate and work with project team members.
    • Supervise junior/intermediate engineers and designers in the preparation of design criteria, drawings, data sheets, technical specifications and design calculations;
    • Professional signing/sealing of deliverables;
    • Help prepare reports, proposals, budgets, schedules, project plans and other supporting documentation as required;
    • Mentor young engineers as part of their career development program

    Skills / Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree or Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering
    • 10-15 years of related engineering experience with EPC or EPCM companies required for this position.
    • 5 years of experience as a Lead Building Service (Mechanical) Engineer (preference will be given to those candidate with experience in Mineral Mining projects)
    • Demonstrated knowledge of pertinent industry standards, regulations and codes such as  Building Code, ASHRAE, CSA, and ASME standards;
    • Strong knowledge of HVAC systems design, preferably specializing in heavy industrial, mining, and/or utility projects (power stations, control and substation buildings, etc.);
    • Must be able to lead mechanical aspect of projects and complete the majority of project work independently, with coordination and resources from other offices.
    • Ability to function as a member of a multidisciplinary team and coordinate mechanical activities between disciplines;
    • Experience with various piping systems, including design of process piping, compressed air systems, plumbing and drainage systems, steam piping, natural gas, and fire protection piping (sprinkler and standpipe systems).
    • Knowledge and experience with LEED® is considered an asset;
    • Working knowledge of the organization’s technology and knowledge and understanding of how the mechanical engineering activities integrate into a complete project
    • Registration as a Professional Engineer in Ontario will be considered an asset
    • Excellent written and oral skills
    • Ability to work and communicate effectively with customers and vendors
    • Ability to work with administrative supervision and effectively manage multiple and conflicting priorities
    • Understanding of the technical and commercial aspects of the organization’s projects and proposals
