  • Overview / Responsibilities

    Wood is currently seeking a Building Services Intermediate PDMS Designer to join our Mining & Minerals team in Oakville, Ontario who will apply extensive and comprehensive knowledge of building services (HVAC, Fire Protection, Compressed Air, Dust Collection, Plumbing, Potable Water, Drainage) engineering principles and practices to the organization’s products and services. The Designer will plan, schedule and conduct broad and/or technically complex engineering assignments requiring judgment, independent evaluation, selection and significant adaptation and deviation from standard techniques and procedures.  


    Key Responsibilities 

    • Building Services including HVAC, Fire Protection, Compressed air, Dust Collection, Plumbing, Potable Water and Drainage design related to mining and metal processing, chemical or similar processing industries
    • Production of building services layouts and plant design using AutoCAD, 2-D and 3-D tools for mining project including extracting drawings from a 3-D model
    • Locate all equipment
    • Prepare and review drawings and designs to ensure standards of quality and accuracy are met including details and GA drawings
    • Read, understand, and comment on manufacturer equipment drawings and specifications
    • Develop equipment lists with engineering
    • Develop utility, heating and ventilation requirements
    • Develop, or provide input into 3D models and 2D drawings;
    • Co-ordinate the Building Services design activities with other disciplines
    • Coordinate with all disciplines on routing and space allotment
    • Coordinate with other offices/companies at interfaces between design areas
    • Creating CAD drawings as per customer rules and presentation requirements
    • Deliver a fit for purpose Building Services design for construction
    • Assist with the development of Building Services Flow Sheets, PFDs and P&IDs
    • Adhere to project budget and schedules
    • Coordinate and work with project team members.
    • Help prepare reports, proposals, budgets, schedules, project plans and other supporting documentation as required;
    • Work in conjunction with the engineers, working from the engineer's directions
    • Review specifications and vendor documentation for associated equipment
    • Mentor young designers as part of their career development program



    Skills / Qualifications

    • Technical college graduate with North American experience in mining and mineral or similar industries
    • 5-7 years of related engineering experience with EPC or EPCM companies required for this position. (preference will be given to those candidate with experience in Mineral Mining projects)
    • Demonstrated knowledge of pertinent industry standards, regulations and codes such as Building Code, ASHRAE, CSA, and ASME standards;
    • Strong knowledge of HVAC systems design, preferably specializing in heavy industrial, mining, and/or utility projects (power stations, control and substation buildings, etc.);
    • Ability to function as a member of a multidisciplinary team and coordinate mechanical activities between disciplines;
    • Experience with various piping systems, including design of process piping, compressed air systems, plumbing and drainage systems, steam piping, natural gas, and fire protection piping (sprinkler and standpipe systems).
    • Knowledge and experience with LEED® is considered an asset;
    • Working knowledge of the organization’s technology and knowledge and understanding of how the mechanical engineering activities integrate into a complete project
    • Experience in building services equipment and layout design in 3D environment
    • Proficiency in the use of 3-D modeling platforms.
    • Candidates must demonstrate strong interpersonal and motivational skills to work well within a team environment
    • Candidate must demonstrate the ability to development relationships and conduct presentations internally and externally.
    • Candidate must demonstrate strong technical skills and apply them effectively
    • Relevant experience with PDMS design and drafting
    • Experience with 3D Design tools such as PDMS, Navisworks, Smart Plant Reviewer
    • A good understanding of mechanical equipment in relation to operation and maintenance
    • A good understanding related to other discipline (such as Civil, Structural, Architectural, Piping, Building Services, Electrical and Instrumentation & Controls) design, equipment and layout requirements
