  • Overview / Responsibilities

    Wood is currently seeking a Senior Project Engineer to join our Mining & Minerals team in Oakville, Ontario who will apply extensive and comprehensive knowledge of mechanical, chemical or process engineering principles and practices to the organization’s products and services. The Project Engineer will plan, schedule and conduct technically complex engineering assignments requiring judgment, independent evaluation, selection and significant adaptation and deviation from standard techniques and procedures. 

     

    Key Responsibilities

     

    • Serve as the project engineer on a project; planning, managing and coordinating the project engineering activities on large and/or technically complex portion of a project and/or serve in an individual contributor role in completing broadly defined and/or technically complex project assignments
    • Involvement in all project activities from design to construction
    • Assist with implementing appropriate project controls for all company projects
    • Clarifying and providing guidance on scope items either by communication with client, experience with project site, knowledge of client systems, or physical investigation of site, and report findings back to design team
    • Assisting in coordination of cross discipline input in to engineering deliverables including location plans, electrical system one line and control system architecture drawings
    • Assisting the Project Manager in all aspects of project work
    • Assisting the Project Controls Manager in reporting of progress to client and preparation of change documentation
    • Assisting in maintenance of the look-ahead engineering schedule and work lists
    • Monitoring discipline progress and performance with the Design Supervisor and developing action plans when required
    • Monitoring project scope and confirm changes using the project management of change process
    • Assisting with development and maintenance of action logs showing decisions and information required to maintain schedule
    • Coordinating sub-area engineering deliverables for scope prior to being issued for a commercial purpose
    • Interfacing with construction as required to provide technical clarity
    • Assisting in maintaining decision record log
    • Keeping the Project Manager informed of difficulties encountered and issues that arise, in conjunction with the Design Supervisor
    • Participating in key discussions at site and with client, with respect to technical inquiries of scope clarification as well as progress reporting
    • Develop, plan, evaluate and recommend solutions for difficult problems
    • Prepares proposals, contract information (CI) sheets, and other engineering documentation using standards and/or new methods as required
    • Review documentation for compliance with contract requirements, good engineering practices, codes, and standards
    • Coordinate and interface with equipment suppliers
    • Prepare technical evaluations of supplier’s proposals
    • Assure the technical quality of work performed by organizational standards, codes and general knowledge of engineering principles and projects
    • May develop and implement improved designs, work methods, practices and procedures
    • Assure that all work on assigned projects is timely, accurate and high quality
    • Perform other related duties as assigned by management
    • Organize, plans, and coordinate own work.
    • Set expectations and monitor delegated activities for schedule and budget
    • Willing to travel to project sites
    • Willing to spend considerable time at project sites if required

    Skills / Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree or Master of Science in Mechanical, Chemical or Process Engineering
    • Minimum 10-15 years of related engineering experience is required for this position
    • Working knowledge of the organization’s technology and knowledge and understanding of how the engineering activities integrate into a complete project
    • Registration as a Professional Engineer in Ontario will be considered an asset
    • Excellent written and oral skills
    • Ability to work and communicate effectively with customers and vendors
    • Ability to work with administrative supervision and effectively manage multiple and conflicting priorities
    • Understanding of the technical and commercial aspects of the organization’s projects and proposals
    • Able to manage design consultants and construction contractors, including contract preparation and negotiation
    • Keen interest in process plant optimization
    • Experience with civil, structural, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation aspects of processing plants and materials handling systems
    • Experience with CAPEX and OPEX estimation
    • Experience with equipment sizing and selection
    • Ability to develop and critique complex project schedules
    • Ability to identify creative solutions
    • Effective communicator and self-starter
    • Ability to work in fast-paced environment handling multiple assignments
    • Experience with mining engineering design, engineering progressing, procurement packages development, contract development, scope of work writing, EWP definition, key quantity management, change control, and scheduling/planning.
