  • Overview / Responsibilities

    Wood Environment & Infrastructure Solutions is currently recruiting an Occupational Health, Safety and Environment Technician / Technologist to join our team in Winnipeg, Manitoba. This is an exciting entry level opportunity for early career candidates motivated to increase their skill sets and work on unique and exciting projects.

     

    The position will provide support to our dynamic health, safety and environment team by conducting a wide range of field assignments, inspections, guiding remedial activities and report writing.

     

    Typical duties may include:

     

    Occupational Health and Safety

    • Assisting with designated substances and hazardous materials surveys and preparing management plans (i.e. lead, mercury, asbestos, PCBs, mould, etc.)
    • Assisting in the completion of occupational hygiene field programs including noise and worker exposure monitoring
    • Use of a wide range of assessment and monitoring instrumentation
    • Phase Contrast Microscopy analysis for asbestos and other fibres
    • Conduct field safety meetings
    • Assist in administrating Wood’s safety program for the Winnipeg office

    Environmental

    • Assisting with environmental site assessments including conducting site visits, data collection, utility locates, soil sampling and groundwater monitoring
    • Conducting field inspections and sampling programs during contaminated soil excavations, tank removals, asbestos abatement and mould remediation
    • Groundwater monitoring

    General Duties

    • Work in the field and laboratory settings
    • Completion of field reports and data entry
    • Assisting project managers in technical assignments including assessment and abatement programs, specification development, and technical report writing
    • Work off-hour shifts and weekends as required in order to accommodate assessment and inspection services required as part of evening, night and weekend work
    • Work on project sites within Manitoba and occasional out of province including working in conjunction with other offices

    Skills / Qualifications

    • Relevant experience or experience in a construction, health and safety, building science or environmental field a definite asset
    • Diploma in relevant discipline preferred - Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental or Engineering Technology
    • Must be fit to wear a respirator and able to work at heights and in confined spaces with appropriate training (provided by Wood)
    • Strong workplace safety practices and training
    • Class 5 driver’s license and a good driving record (driving abstract required)
    • Participate in criminal records checks and/or drug screening for site access
    • Good report writing skills and demonstrated word processing and computer skills
    • Strong people skills with an ability to work in a team environment
    • Self-motivated with good organizational skills, can take initiative, handle challenges, prioritize multiple tasks, and provide superior service to clients
    • OHS, asbestos and/or mould training or experience considered an asset
    • Basic surveying and AutoCAD skills considered an asset
